"I have been involved with endurance sports for many years. I always believed in stretching before and after my running and bike riding. I was attending yoga classes at the local health club in 2005. One day I was complaining about the cold room where I was practicing. A Bikram yogi gave me the local Bikram studio's card and told me that I might like this practice. Initially I saw the benefits on a physical level. There were also some social aspects. After class I would go out with some fellow yogis for coffee. I have formed many new friendships through Bikram yoga.
Over the past 10 years I have been taking part in the Michigan Senior Olympics/ Games in the bike racing events. From these events I have qualified for the National Senior Games. I have really enjoyed competing in the time trials and road bike racing over the years. This past summer I attended the Michigan Senior Olympics where I participated in the 20 km and 40 km road race and took first place in both events. I attributed some of my success in these events to Bikram yoga.
Bikram yoga has helped me by keeping me free from overuse injuries and also strengthening my core, which helps with bike riding/racing.This practice has given me more energy to do the activities I enjoy. It has reduced stress in my life. I feel more calm in stressful situations and also experience a higher degree of contentment.
Bikram Yoga has been part of my life for over 10 years. Of course there are times when I don't feel like practicing, but I just keep coming to class. I am inspired by the heartfelt accounts of how this practice has benefitted fellow students. The teachers are very passionate and committed to this practice. I hope that what I have shared has been helpful and encouraging."
